What Is A Water Management Plan?

January 17, 2022, by Tower Water

view of water management plantWhen it comes to managing a facility, you already have a lot of responsibilities to keep track of. You may not be paying too much attention to the quality of your building’s water and how it is impacting the long-term success and safety of your equipment.

However, keeping up with a water management plan is a vital part of successfully running your facility, and if you do not know where to start or would like some additional guidance on your current strategy, it is best to work with the professionals.

An Overview Of Water Management Plans

A water management plan, in a nutshell, is a comprehensive strategy that identifies any potentially dangerous or problematic elements in your water system and lays out complete strategies for how to overcome these issues.

Water management plans are not a set it and forget it type of creation; rather, they must be consistently updated, tested and reviewed to ensure that they are working well. Failure to adequately create or implement a water management plan could result not only in excess costs that could have been prevented but also compliance issues and even health concerns.

Why Implement A Water Management Plan?

A water management plan is crucial for a variety of reasons, but perhaps the most well-known is its role in mitigating the growth and spread of dangerous bacteria. Chief among these is Legionella, a microorganism that can spread to humans and cause severe illness or even death.

Cooling towers are the most common culprit behind Legionella outbreaks because they create mist and vapor as part of their regular operation, aerosolizing the bacteria into the air, where it can be inhaled. However, other bacteria can also be present in the water, such as E. coli, Salmonella and even Giardia.

In addition to reducing the health risks of bacteria in the water, water management plans also improve the longevity of your facility. Furthermore, local and state regulations also stipulate the requirements for a water management plan. If you fail to maintain adequate documentation about your strategy, you could fail to maintain compliance and receive fines or worse be the source of a legionella outbreak.

The Steps Comprising A Water Management Strategy

The first step in creating your water management plan is to pull together a team to navigate the program. This includes the people responsible for regularly ensuring that the water is treated as intended and experts who will be treating and testing the water. For best results, you can bundle these tasks together by relying on the experts to help you create and implement your water treatment strategy.

Once you have identified the treatments that are necessary, you will also need to regularly monitor your progress, making adjustments along the way.

Simply putting a water treatment strategy into practice is not enough; you must also validate it to ensure that it is accomplishing what it needs to. Monitor your water treatment and establish methods of adjusting the efficacy when needed. Your water management plan must also include documentation of all of these steps, as well as the results of your regular testing and evaluation, in order to remain compliant with local and state regulations. If you need help throughout this process, talk to the pros with years of experience. You do not have to tackle this project alone.
